Tree Pruning
Tree Pruning Wellington
Premier Tree Surgeons prunes trees across Wellington, from young ornamentals that need shaping to mature natives and exotics that need dead wood removed and their structure sorted out. Pruning is not the same as cutting bits off. Each cut changes how the tree grows, and the aim is a tree that is healthier, safer in the wind and better suited to its spot than it was before we arrived. Our NZQA qualified arborists are based in Karori and work throughout the city and the wider Wellington region. Quotes are free.

Pruning that keeps Wellington trees healthy, strong and safe
Types of pruning we carry out
Our arborists prune to the arboriculture standards registered with NZQA, choosing the method that suits the tree and the problem:
- Crown thinning removes selected branches through the canopy so wind and light pass through it, without changing the tree's size or shape.
- Crown lifting removes or shortens the lowest branches to give clearance over paths, lawns, driveways and roofs.
- Deadwooding takes out dead, dying and diseased branches before they drop on someone or something.
- Formative pruning trains young trees into a strong framework so they need far less work when mature.
- Fruit tree pruning keeps apples, pears, plums, feijoas and citrus productive and at a height you can pick.
- Clearance pruning keeps growth away from power lines, fibre and buildings. See our post on trees near power lines in Wellington.
- Remedial pruning tidies torn and broken limbs after storm damage so the wounds can seal.
Where a tree has simply outgrown its position, the answer is usually a crown reduction rather than pruning, and we will say so.

When is the best time to prune trees in Wellington?
Most deciduous trees are best pruned while dormant in winter, when the structure is easy to see and the tree loses the least energy. Trees that flower in spring, such as magnolias and cherries, are pruned straight after flowering so you do not lose next year's display. Stone fruit are pruned in dry summer weather to reduce the risk of disease getting into the cuts. Dead, broken and dangerous branches can and should be removed at any time of year.
Wellington's weather adds a practical layer. Heavy pruning just before the equinox gales leaves fresh wounds exposed to the worst of the wind, and work on steep sections is safer when the ground is dry. If the pruning is about safety or clearance, timing matters less than getting it done.

Tree pruning in Wellington: what to expect
How much should come off?
Less than most people expect. A tree uses its leaves to make the energy it lives on, and removing a large share of the canopy in one season forces it to draw on reserves and throw out fast, weakly attached regrowth. Good pruning removes what is dead, damaged, crossing or in the way, and stops there. Where a tree needs a lot taken off, we stage the work over two or three seasons so it stays healthy. We never top trees. Cutting the main stems off flat looks tidy for a month and then produces a thicket of weak shoots that are far more dangerous in the wind than the original canopy.
Pruning and the Wellington wind
A tree that has grown up in Wellington has built its canopy around the wind it gets. Long, bare limbs with foliage only at the ends catch more wind than a canopy with growth spread evenly through it, so pruning that strips the interior and leaves the tips is the wrong approach here. Thinning the canopy evenly, shortening over-extended limbs back to a side branch and removing dead wood all reduce the load on the tree without upsetting its balance. On exposed ridgelines and in the coastal suburbs this matters more than anywhere.
What affects the price
The height of the tree and how much climbing is involved, the number of trees, how much material comes off, and how close the work is to the house, glass, lines and the neighbours all affect the price. Access on hill sections matters too. We quote after seeing the tree, and the quote includes chipping and clean-up. Regular pruning on a two or three year cycle costs less over time than leaving a tree for a decade and then asking for it to be rescued.
Protected trees and council rules
Some Wellington trees are listed as notable or heritage trees, and pruning them beyond light maintenance needs council approval. Other sites have rules about vegetation in the District Plan. We check before quoting and tell you if an application is needed. Our guide to Wellington tree regulations for property owners explains the main rules.
Frequently asked questions
How often should trees be pruned?
Young trees benefit from formative pruning every year or two while they establish. Mature garden trees usually need attention every two to three years. Fruit trees are pruned every year.
Can you prune a tree in summer?
Yes. Light pruning, dead wood removal and clearance work can be done in summer, and stone fruit should be. Heavy structural pruning of deciduous trees is better left for winter.
Will pruning make my tree grow back thicker?
Pruning done at the right growth points does not. Topping and hard cutting do, which is one of the reasons we do not do them.
Do you prune fruit trees?
Yes, for productivity and for keeping the fruit within reach. Tell us what you grow and when it fruits and we will time the work to suit.
Do you prune native trees differently?
Species such as pohutukawa, totara and kowhai respond differently to cuts than exotic deciduous trees, and some are protected. We prune natives conservatively and check their status first.
